Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India's operational metro network has grown from 248 km to 1,200 km over the last 12 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 23-km-long Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line) via video conferencing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. According to The Hindu, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase-II, involving a total investment of approximately Rs 21,800 crore.
The Pink Line, built at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore, connects the Hinjewadi IT hub to the District Court Metro station. The corridor will be operated by women and will meet around 30 per cent of its electricity requirements through solar power.
The Phase-II expansion is estimated to cost around Rs 13,500 crore and will include four corridors: Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A. These lines are intended to cover residential, commercial, and IT hubs across Pune.
Modi said that India's operational metro network has increased from 248 km in 2014 to 1,200 km. He noted that metro services, which were available in only five cities in 2014, are now operational in 26 cities.
The Prime Minister stated that better urban infrastructure would accelerate the country's economic growth. He added that the expansion of the Pune Metro would improve connectivity, save commuting time, and boost the city's productivity.
