The new corridor connects the Hinjewadi IT hub to Shivajinagar and will be operated entirely by women.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 23-km Pune Metro Line 3, known as the Pink Line, through video conferencing on Tuesday. The project, which connects Maan to the District Court Metro station, was built at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore, according to The Indian Express.
The new line links the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar to provide an alternative to road travel for commuters. In a distinct operating model, the corridor will be run by a women-led workforce. Additionally, it is planned that solar energy will provide approximately 30 per cent of the electricity required for the line.
During the event, Modi also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase II. These corridors, identified as Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A, are estimated to cost around Rs 13,500 crore, according to the Economic Times.
The Phase II expansion aims to connect various residential and commercial areas, including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also participated in the programme.
Addressing the event, Modi stated that the NDA government has focused on urban transportation and ease of living since 2014. He noted that India's operational metro network has grown from 248 km to 1,200 km during this period.
