Assam Police arrest six in multi-crore fraud with suspected Pakistan links

The Special Task Force is investigating an interstate network that used mule bank accounts to siphon several crores of rupees.

The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) arrested six individuals for their involvement in an organised financial fraud syndicate, according to reports by The News Mill and ANI on November 2. Investigators are currently looking into possible connections between the group and Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).

The crackdown began after central agencies, including Military Intelligence in Gajraj, Tezpur, provided intelligence regarding an interstate network using compromised bank accounts. Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Rajib Saikia said the probe started following a complaint from the Sonitpur Police.

Saikia stated that a State Bank of India account held by Marjina Begum of Ganesh Nagar, Guwahati, received lakhs of rupees between June 22 and August 5, 2026. The funds were withdrawn almost immediately after being deposited, a pattern typical of mule accounts.

On October 28, the STF arrested Begum, Mofijul Haque (22), and Himangshu Das (19) during a raid where mobile phones and documents were seized. Following interrogations, Rakib Hussain (34) was arrested on October 29, while Iftar Hussain (25) and Arman Azuz Hoque (20) were apprehended on October 30.

Authorities said the network has functioned across various states for almost two years, stealing several crores of rupees. The person believed to be leading the operation is thought to be managing the group from outside Assam.

The STF is working to find remaining members, locate more mule accounts, and determine the scale of the suspected links to Pakistan-based operatives and other anti-national elements.
