Himachal Congress demands BJP apology over welcoming Assam CM

Spokesperson Kushal Mungta alleged the BJP's actions contradicted its claims of protecting Hindu traditions and cow conservation.

Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Kushal Mungta on Monday called for an apology from Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and other BJP leaders. The demand follows the BJP's welcome of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the 'Arajkta Hatao' march in Shimla, according to ANI.

Mungta questioned the BJP's decision to share a platform with Sarma, citing the Chief Minister's alleged April 8, 2026, statement regarding beef consumption. He stated that the BJP, which claims to represent Sanatan culture, should explain its association with a leader who made such remarks.

The spokesperson also raised concerns regarding Assam's financial situation. He noted that Assam's outstanding liabilities rose from approximately Rs 72,256 crore in 2019-20 to around Rs 1,61,761 crore by March 31, 2025, which included Rs 1,43,179 crore in interest-bearing debt.

Mungta further alleged that Sarma has faced corruption investigations involving him and his wife. He also cited Union Home Ministry figures from March 14, 2018, to question the BJP's stance on infiltration, noting a decline in deported Bangladeshi nationals between 2013 and 2017.

Addressing the current state government, Mungta said the decision on Himachal Pradesh's leadership rests with the 70 lakh people of the state. He added that the Congress would respond to attempts to influence governments through democratic means.
