Amit Shah praises Chandigarh Police for setting national benchmarks

The Union Home Minister said Chandigarh will be the first city to become drug-free as he presented the President’s Colour to the force.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday lauded the Chandigarh Police for its performance, stating the force has established standards for police units across India. Speaking at the 60th Raising Day celebrations and the President’s Colour Award Ceremony, Shah said the force has worked to safeguard the city since 1966.

According to The Hindu, Shah stated that the Union government aims to build a drug-free India and expects Chandigarh to be the first city to achieve this. He noted that following the implementation of new criminal laws, the Chandigarh Police increased its conviction rate in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases to 93 per cent.

The Minister added that from August 4, 2024, to date, 8,206 FIRs have been registered in Chandigarh. Of these, the police filed online charge sheets in 7,590 cases and ensured convictions in 85 per cent of cases.

Shah also highlighted the force's beat policing app, which he said helps citizens access services without visiting police stations. He described the President’s Colour as a recognition of the force's six decades of service and sensitivity.

The Home Minister remarked that while policing often focuses on terrorism, drugs, and cybercrime, providing ease of access to services is an essential responsibility.
