Assam CM targets Congress over SIR protests at Shimla rally
Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that the Opposition is protesting to protect illegal immigrants during the electoral roll revision exercise.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked the Congress party on Sunday during a 'Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao' march in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, according to The Assam Tribune. Sarma defended the Election Commission of India’s electoral roll revision exercise, or SIR, and claimed the Congress is protesting to protect illegal immigrants.
Sarma stated that Rahul Gandhi is performing a drama to shield invaders and said the people of India will not allow such names in electoral rolls. He argued that SIR is necessary in states like Assam and West Bengal to eliminate the names of illegal immigrants.
The Chief Minister questioned Congress allegations of electoral malpractice, asking why they claim 'vote chori' only in states where the BJP is in power. He also made personal remarks towards Rahul Gandhi, suggesting he should leave India permanently as he has no future in the Vidhan Sabha or Lok Sabha.
In social media posts, Sarma criticised the Congress for holding a rally in Delhi on November 1, alleging it was insensitive to the Sikh community by invoking the 1984 anti-Sikh violence. He claimed more than 3,000 Sikhs were killed following the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
Sarma also referred to the 1946 Congress presidential contest, claiming Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had support from 12 of the 15 Provincial Congress Committees before being pressured to withdraw. He called it an irony that Jawaharlal Nehru's great-grandson is now lecturing the nation on 'Vote Chori'.
A similar protest rally took place in Morigaon, led by Nagaon MP Devasish Sharma, Jagiroad MLA Pijush Hazarika, and Dilip Saikia. Meanwhile, INDIA bloc supporters gathered at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.
