Abhishek Banerjee alleges BJP attack on his Kolkata residence
The Trinamool Congress leader claimed BJP workers attacked his home at 2 am on Saturday during his birthday celebrations.
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed on Saturday that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers attacked his residence in Kalighat, Kolkata, at approximately 2 am. According to reports from Deccan Chronicle and ANI, the incident occurred during celebrations for Banerjee's 39th birthday.
Banerjee alleged that the attack followed two days of reconnaissance by unidentified individuals who claimed to be police personnel when confronted. He stated that BJP supporters hurled stones and bricks at TMC workers, resulting in several injuries. One colleague, Tapas, reportedly sustained a severe injury requiring plastic surgery, while another suffered a bone fracture near the eye.
The Diamond Harbour MP accused the Kolkata Police of being silent spectators during the violence and claimed the attackers carried revolvers. Banerjee described the incident as the seventh attempt on his life in six months and criticised the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court for not intervening.
West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh rejected the allegations, calling the incident a "drama" intended to generate public sympathy. Ghosh suggested that the birthday celebrations on a footpath led to a backlash and questioned the motive behind any alleged attempt on Banerjee's life.
Following the clashes, which reportedly lasted until 7 am, a significant police presence was deployed to secure the area and some individuals were taken into custody. Banerjee has demanded a thorough inquiry from the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Union Home Ministry, and the West Bengal Police to uncover the motives behind the alleged conspiracy.
