BJP and TMC spar after attack on Abhishek Banerjee's residence
West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh dismissed claims of an attack on the Trinamool Congress leader's home as an attempt to mislead people.
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that his Kolkata residence was attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at 2 am on Saturday. The incident occurred at his Harish Mukherjee Road home following a clash between two groups that resulted in at least eight injuries, according to reports from Telegraph India and ANI.
Banerjee claimed the attack was the seventh attempt on his life in six months. He accused the Kolkata Police of failing to prevent the incident and criticised the judiciary for remaining mute spectators. The MP had previously alleged that unidentified individuals had been conducting reconnaissance of his office and home for two days, claiming they identified themselves as police personnel when confronted.
West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh dismissed the allegations, questioning who would have the time to kill the TMC leader. Ghosh stated that celebrating a birthday on a footpath could lead to a backlash and suggested the claims were being used to mislead the public.
Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited the residence on Saturday afternoon, alleging that lumpens were sent to attack the MP because the party is part of the INDIA bloc. She said she would personally approach the Supreme Court if required.
Banerjee has previously sought the restoration of his Z-plus security cover through the Calcutta High Court, a matter that remains pending.
