Iran executes three men for armed unrest during January protests

The men were convicted of carrying out operations for Israel and the United States during anti-government demonstrations.

Iran executed three men on Sunday, November 8, 2026, for their involvement in armed unrest during anti-government protests in January, according to reports from BBC News and The Hindu.

The executed individuals, identified as Hassan Dioband, Hamid Kazemi, and Reza Zanganeh, were accused of using firearms, grenades, and Molotov cocktails. They were also charged with setting fire to public facilities and damaging an electricity substation in Karaj, which led to power outages in some areas.

The Supreme Court upheld the convictions of the three men, who were found guilty of participating in operational activities for the United States, the Israeli Zionist regime, and hostile groups. Their assets were also ordered to be confiscated.

Hassan Dioband was taken into custody on 11 January after being linked to incitement to violence and attacks on public property. Ten other individuals accused of taking part in the unrest under his leadership were later arrested and received prison sentences ranging from 5 to 10 years.

The executions follow a rise in death penalties noted by UN human rights chief Volker Türk. According to Amnesty International, Iran executed at least 2,159 people last year, the highest figure since 1981.
