Saudi-led coalition intercepts Houthi missiles targeting Riyadh and Eastern province

The interception follows reports of explosions in the Saudi capital and damage to an Aramco building in the financial district.

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Sunday that its air defences destroyed three ballistic missiles launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi group towards the kingdom. Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the coalition spokesperson, stated that two of these missiles were directed at the capital, Riyadh, according to Al Jazeera.

The coalition also reported the interception of two cruise missiles in Riyadh and the southern region. Earlier, al-Maliki confirmed that another ballistic missile targeting the kingdom's Eastern province was also intercepted.

In Riyadh, witnesses cited by AFP reported loud explosions and damage to an Aramco building in the King Abdullah Financial District. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed the group conducted six operations targeting Saudi military positions, Riyadh airport, and Aramco oil facilities.

The escalation follows reports from the Houthi-run Health Ministry that Saudi-led coalition air strikes killed 33 people in the village of al-Shariyah, near Sanaa. Health Ministry spokesperson Anees al-Asbahi said the casualties included 13 children and eight women, with 39 others wounded.

The United Nations reports that more than 1,600 people have died and nearly 300,000 have been displaced since a 2022 ceasefire collapsed in July. Fighting has intensified as government forces launched the Dawn of Yemen operation last month to retake territory held by the Houthis.
