Saudi Aramco building in Riyadh damaged in attempted attack

An administrative tower in the King Abdullah Financial District sustained minor damage from falling shrapnel during an attempted attack on Sunday.

An administrative building belonging to the state oil giant Saudi Aramco in Riyadh was damaged by falling shrapnel following an attempted attack on Sunday, according to the Saudi Ministry of Energy. The damage occurred at a tower in the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), with reports noting blown-out windows across several floors, Al Jazeera reported.

The Ministry of Energy stated there were no casualties or fatalities resulting from the incident. Authorities responded to the situation and later announced that the danger had passed, according to the Hindustan Times.

The attempted attack follows claims by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree that the group conducted six military operations targeting strategic installations in the kingdom. Saree claimed the operations involved ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, including a strike targeting an Aramco distillation tower in Riyadh, The Economic Times reported.

Major-General Turki al-Maliki, the Saudi-led coalition spokesperson, said air defences destroyed several ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis. Two missiles were directed towards Riyadh, while another targeted the Eastern province, and two others were intercepted in the southern region, Al Jazeera reported.

The Houthis have increased attacks on Saudi airports, ports, and oil facilities since a 2022 truce collapsed in July. This follows a strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on October 10 that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, according to Saudi authorities.
