Four dead and 120 injured in Egypt train collision in Giza

A passenger train derailed in the Al-Ayyat district after hitting the rear of another service on Sunday.

At least four people died and 120 people were injured after a passenger train collided with another train in Egypt's Giza province on Sunday, according to reports from the Times of India and WION.

The accident occurred in the Al-Ayyat district, located on the outskirts of Cairo. A northbound train travelling from Giza to Fayoum struck the rear of a service running from Cairo to Aswan, which caused the train to derail.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health confirmed 64 injuries, while state newspaper Al-Akhbar Al-Youm, as quoted by AFP, reported at least 120 people were injured. The Ministry of Health dispatched 52 ambulances to the site to transport the injured to two regional hospitals.

Emergency response teams and cranes were deployed to the crash site to remove the wreckage. The Egyptian railway authority stated that efforts are underway to clear the tracks and restore normal train services.

Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. The Al-Ayyat district previously saw a collision between two freight trains in September last year that injured a driver and his assistant.
