Abhishek Banerjee alleges BJP supporters attacked his Kolkata residence at 2 am

The Trinamool Congress MP claimed the incident was part of a conspiracy and the seventh attempt on his life in six months.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters attacked his residence in Kolkata at 2 am on Saturday. According to reports by Rediff and The Indian Express, the incident occurred while TMC workers were gathered at his Kalighat home to celebrate his birthday.

Banerjee, a three-term Diamond Harbour MP, claimed the attack followed two days of continuous reconnaissance of his office and residence. He alleged that unidentified individuals conducting the surveillance claimed to be police personnel when confronted.

The MP stated that the attack involved stone-pelting, vandalism, and the use of sticks fitted with nails. He claimed four to five supporters sustained serious injuries, including one person requiring plastic surgery and another suffering a fracture.

Banerjee described the incident as the seventh attempt on his life in the last six months. He accused the police and the judiciary of inaction and questioned the safety of elected officials in West Bengal.

The BJP rejected the allegations, with West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh suggesting the confrontation was a backlash to the birthday celebrations. Ghosh stated that if someone creates a disturbance, a backlash is bound to occur.

Kolkata Police confirmed that an investigation into the commotion is underway. Prohibitory orders have been clamped around the residence, preventing gatherings of more than five people.
