Karnataka Minister questions central government over high ethanol fuel levels
Minister G Parameshwara demanded an investigation after independent tests in Karnataka allegedly showed ethanol content reaching 31.2 per cent.
Karnataka Minister G Parameshwara has questioned the central government regarding fuel quality after independent tests in the state allegedly showed ethanol levels as high as 31.2 per cent. According to ANI, the findings significantly exceed the mandated E20 blend.
Parameshwara, in a post on X, raised concerns regarding vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, and consumer rights. He demanded an immediate probe and sought explanations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The minister also criticised the Centre for restricting the procurement of certain sugarcane-based ethanol products. He noted that this occurs while farmers in Karnataka are facing severe drought conditions.
During a press conference, Karnataka Minister Rizwan Arshad said the government collected 63 petrol samples from various locations in every district and from all major oil companies. Arshad warned that fuel with more than 20 per cent ethanol could damage vehicle components not designed for such concentrations.
Arshad stated that 99 per cent of vehicles might be unable to manage fuel with ethanol levels above 20 per cent. He noted that for most vehicles, parts such as seals, gaskets, hoses, and rubber components could deteriorate.
Parameshwara called for the mandatory public disclosure of ethanol blending levels at retail outlets and requested safeguards to protect motorists from vehicular damage.
