Sunil Jakhar says Punjab needs BJP-Akali approach for communal harmony
The former BJP state chief suggests an alliance must prioritise the state's interests ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Senior BJP leader Sunil Jakhar has stated that any alliance for the February 2027 Punjab Assembly elections must be guided by the interests of the state, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Jakhar, the former BJP state chief, said that the decision regarding potential talks with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will be made by the highest level of the party.
He warned that attempts to divide society and damage communal amity are occurring in Punjab. Jakhar noted that the weakening of the panthic establishment has allowed radical elements to occupy space.
The leader suggested that a broad-minded approach similar to the 1997-98 BJP-Akali alliance is necessary to preserve Hindu-Sikh amity. He said the state needs a credible panthic establishment to address Sikh concerns.
Jakhar accused the AAP government of presiding over the criminalisation of politics and creating circumstances that allow radical elements to rise. He also claimed Congress leaders are ignoring larger concerns of the state.
Regarding the economy, Jakhar said the AAP government is living beyond its means and noted the state has liabilities of Rs 32,000 crore towards employees. He added that a BJP-led government could work with the Centre to access schemes and revive the economy.
