Ranbir Kapoor says late father Rishi Kapoor was critical of his films
The actor shared how his father questioned his film choices during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor revealed that his late father, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, was often not happy with his choice of films and characters. Speaking to Amitabh Bachchan on the quiz reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati 18, Kapoor discussed his father's approach to his work, according to The Indian Express and The Assam Tribune.
Kapoor mentioned that when his father watched films such as Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh, Barfi, and Tamasha, he did not understand the type of films being made. He said his father would ask which nation he was serving, referencing a line by his great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor, that art is in the service of the nation.
The actor noted that Rishi Kapoor questioned if he was making films only for people in tier-one cities. Kapoor said that at the time, he did not realise what his father was trying to convey because he was following an individualistic approach to the characters he understood.
Kapoor also recalled a story from a book by his aunt, Ritu Nanda, about his grandfather, Raj Kapoor. The story described how Prithviraj Kapoor would tell a performer there was always room for improvement to ensure they did not get lost in praise.
The actor said he now understands that his father's critiques were intended to help him work harder to carry the family legacy forward. Rishi Kapoor passed away in April 2020 after a battle with cancer.
