Radhika Apte describes experience in Legend as patriarchal
The actor said she hated her role in the 2014 film because it required her to romance an older co-star.
Actor Radhika Apte has described her experience working in the 2014 Telugu film Legend as patriarchal, according to the Hindustan Times. While promoting her web series Akka on Zoom, Apte said the role was the most challenging of her career and that she hated everything about it.
Apte explained that the role required her character to marry her maternal uncle, or 'mama'. She said the situation was tough because she had to romance a much older actor and noted that the character dies during an action sequence where the co-star had to throw her.
Although Apte did not name the film during the interview, the details refer to the Boyapati Srinu directed film Legend. At the time of the film's release, Nandamuri Balakrishna was 54 and Apte was 29.
Apte has worked in four Telugu films, including two with Balakrishna. Her final Telugu film was Lion, released in 2015, which she also acted in with Balakrishna.
The actor also recently criticised colourism in South Indian film industries during an interaction with Galatta. She said she finds it appalling that North Indian actresses were initially cast because they were fair-skinned.
