Rahul Gandhi will be PM only in mock Parliament, says Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised the INDIA bloc's symbolic impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday criticised Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding the INDIA bloc's symbolic impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. According to ANI, Sarma stated that while Gandhi might act as Prime Minister in a mock Parliament, Narendra Modi would remain the Prime Minister in the actual Parliament.
The Chief Minister's comments followed the Opposition's symbolic impeachment programme and a rally concerning alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. Sarma claimed that Congress leaders had previously tried to make Gandhi the Prime Minister without success. He said that after failed attempts, they organised a mock Parliament at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge where Gandhi became the PM.
The political dispute involves the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and claims regarding the removal of genuine voters. On Saturday, the INDIA bloc passed a symbolic motion for the impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar during a mock Parliament in the national capital. The event was led by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and included various Opposition leaders.
Rahul Gandhi had warned that the Opposition would not let the CEC escape, while BJP leaders described the exercise as melodrama. On Sunday, the INDIA bloc held a large rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan involving leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav to protest the SIR exercise.
