Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla says dissent is essential to democracy

Addressing a conference in Panchkula, the Speaker stated that differences in opinion and perspectives are natural in a democratic system.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Monday that differences in opinions and perspectives are natural in a democracy and that dissent must be respected. He was addressing the inaugural session of the ‘Janpratinidhi Sammelan’ organised by the Haryana Legislative Assembly in Panchkula under the ‘Samvidhan Pakhwada’.

According to The Hindu, Birla stated that dissent provides direction, offers a vision, and inspires people to work. He added that despite differences of opinion, everyone must make collective efforts to move the country and the State forward.

Birla noted that while running the government is a responsibility, public service is an even greater responsibility. The event was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Haryana Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan, and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Speaking at the occasion, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that Haryana faces multiple challenges that require urgent introspection. He stated that around 80 criminal gangs are currently active in the State.

Hooda also mentioned that Haryana has slipped to 14th position in terms of fiscal health, ranks 15th in borrowings, and 11th in Sustainable Development Goals. He said serious introspection is also necessary regarding the issue of unemployment.
