IPL player retention deadline extended to 17 November

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has suggested moving the tournament to a January start with a 94-match season.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) player retention deadline has been moved to 17 November, according to Bhaskar English. The deadline was previously set for 15 November, representing a two-day extension.

The auction date and venue remain unchanged, with the event scheduled for 16 December in Goa. This auction date coincides with the fifth ODI between India and New Zealand in Mount Maunganui and a match between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has proposed shifting the tournament window from the traditional April-May period to a timeframe between October and April. Modi suggested that January could serve as a potential starting month for the competition.

Modi proposed a 94-match season, which he said would enable all 10 teams to play each other twice, with one home game and one away game for every opponent. He noted that a longer season could help establish a weekly rhythm and provide breathing space.

Addressing weather concerns, Modi suggested the October-April window could help avoid the extreme heat experienced during the later stages of the current schedule. He noted that evening matches do not fully protect players, staff, or spectators from the heat.

Modi also stated that while a January start might increase dew issues, the BCCI should study conditions like temperature, rain, and air quality at all venues. He suggested the BCCI could move home matches if a specific venue is unsuitable during certain months.
