Rohit Sharma likely to return as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2027

The franchise has overhauled its support staff and may move Hardik Pandya to another team via a trade.

Mumbai Indians are likely to appoint Rohit Sharma as captain for the IPL 2027 season, according to reports from The Indian Express and The Times of India.

The franchise has undergone a complete overhaul of its support staff following a ninth-place finish in the 2026 season.

Kieron Pollard has been appointed as head coach, with Robin Uthappa named batting coach, T Dilip as fielding coach, Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach, and Dhawal Kulkarni as development bowling coach.

A source told The Indian Express that Rohit initially suggested Tilak Varma for the role, but the franchise requested Rohit to take over, to which he agreed.

The Times of India reported that Tilak Varma is in line to be Sharma's deputy, while Hardik Pandya is reportedly heading towards an exit.

Mumbai Indians are reportedly in talks with three teams regarding a possible trade for Pandya, with an official announcement expected soon.
