BCCI extends IPL player retention deadline to 17 November

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has pushed back the deadline for franchises to submit player lists by two days.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the deadline for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises to submit their player retention lists to 17 November, according to reports by Outlook and Bhaskar English. The previous deadline was 15 November.

The extension follows the scheduling of the fifth and final India-New Zealand ODI at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on 15 November. While the retention deadline has moved, the BCCI has not changed the date for the IPL mini-auction, which remains scheduled for 16 December in Goa.

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has proposed moving the tournament to a window between October and April, suggesting January as a potential start date. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Modi said the April-May window was an available opportunity rather than a permanent ideal. He suggested the BCCI identify the most suitable dates within the October-April period.

Modi also proposed expanding the season to 94 matches. He stated this format would enable all 10 teams to play each other twice, with nine home and nine away league matches before the playoffs. He noted that a longer season could help create a weekly rhythm and address concerns regarding rising temperatures during the later stages of the tournament.

The IPL, which began in 2008, increased from eight to 10 teams in 2022. The tournament's value reached $20.6bn this year and it will enter its 20th edition in 2027.
