Bhutan King dedicates stupa to Prime Minister Modi in Gelephu

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk dedicated one of 108 stupas built in nine hours to Narendra Modi.

Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk dedicated one of 108 Buddhist stupas to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, November 1, 2026. According to The Hindu, the stupa was part of a nine-hour construction project in Gelephu to lay the spiritual foundation for the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) project.

The King dedicated Chorten Number 76 to Mr Modi as a symbol of appreciation for India's support for the GMC project. Bhutanese officials stated the number 76 was selected because the Prime Minister turned 76 more than a month ago.

About 40,000 trained volunteers built the 108 Jangchub Chortens between 3 a.m. and 12 noon. The stupas, which are 15 metres tall and 108 metres apart, were constructed using steel and other improvised materials along the Mau Chhu River.

Representing India for 'Project 108', Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju thanked the King for the dedication. He said the milestone is a symbol of the spiritual and civilisational bonds between the two nations.

Addressing the public, King Wangchuk said people from every generation came together to make the project possible. He noted that Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government have been enormously supportive of the vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City.
