US administration announces $15 billion support for farmers before midterms

The US Department of Agriculture will provide payments and loans to help producers manage rising fuel and fertiliser costs.

The Donald Trump administration has announced over $15 billion in loans, payments, and other support for US farmers, according to a Times of India report. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled the measures in the weeks preceding the midterm elections to help ease the impact of increasing fertiliser and fuel expenses.

More than half of the package includes an $8 billion one-time payment programme for farmers dealing with a sharp rise in diesel prices. The USDA said it would release more details this month, though it has not specified when the funds will be distributed.

The assistance package also features at least $5 billion in guaranteed loans for fishermen and ranchers. Additionally, $1.8 billion will go to landowners and producers in conservation programmes, while $86.6 million in grants is designated for specialty crop producers.

Other allocations include $573 million for fertiliser manufacturing projects and $57 million to increase meat processing capacity. The department also plans to buy up to $472.5 million in agricultural commodities to support producers and charitable programmes.

Gregg Ibendahl, a farm management specialist at Kansas State University, said the payments could help farmers manage expensive fertiliser and fuel costs. However, he noted that temporary government assistance would not resolve the broader issues driving up production costs.

Alexandra Middlewood, an associate professor of political science at Wichita State University, said reactions to the assistance have been mixed. She noted that while many welcome the support, some see the programmes as one-time bailouts rather than long-term solutions.
