Stock markets end marginally lower in special Muhurat trading session

The Sensex and Nifty snapped a seven-day rally as investors booked profits during the auspicious Diwali session.

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended slightly lower during the special one-hour Muhurat trading session on Sunday, November 8, 2026. According to reports from The Times of India and The Hindu, the benchmark indices failed to maintain early gains, ending a seven-session rally as investors engaged in profit-taking.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 28.62 points, or 0.04 per cent, to close at 80,999.40. During the session, the index reached a peak of 81,442.11. Of the 30 companies in the Sensex, 16 saw gains while 14 closed lower.

The NSE Nifty fell 43.95 points, or 0.18 per cent, to settle at 24,986.40.

Major losers among Sensex stocks included Mahindra & Mahindra, InterGlobe Aviation, Trent, Infosys, Bharti Airtel, and Axis Bank. Conversely, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Tata Steel, Maruti Suzuki, and Power Grid were among the top gainers. Despite the marginal dip, total market capitalisation for BSE-listed companies reached approximately Rs 5,05,67,743.40 crore.

Muhurat trading is a symbolic, short-duration session held on Diwali to mark the start of the Hindu calendar year, Samvat 2083. While the indices closed in the red, Kamlesh Shroff, National President of the Association of NSE Members of India (ANMI), stated to ANI that strong economic growth of over 7 per cent is expected to support equity markets.

Raamdeo Agrawal, chairman and co-founder of Motilal Oswal Financial Services, told PTI that the market has the potential to provide bumper returns by the next Diwali due to low valuations and high earnings growth.
