Sensex and Nifty end marginally lower in Diwali Muhurat trading session

Benchmark indices faced volatility and profit-taking during the special 70-minute trading window marking the start of Samvat 2083.

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended the special Diwali Muhurat trading session on a subdued note on Sunday. According to reports from Mint, Siasat, and Rediff, the indices faced volatility and profit-taking after a seven-day rally. The Sensex closed 28.62 points, or 0.04 per cent, lower at 80,999.40, while the Nifty settled 43.95 points, or 0.18 per cent, lower at 24,986.40.

The 70-minute session, which ran from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm, began with early gains before the indices lost momentum. The Sensex reached a high of 81,442.11 during the session, while the Nifty hit an intra-day high of 25,132. Siasat reported that losses in banking and IT stocks weighed on sentiment.

Tata Steel was a top gainer, rising 2.5 per cent to reach ₹191 per share following its Q2 performance. Mint noted that the company's consolidated net profit rose over 16 per cent year-on-year to ₹3,700 crore in the September quarter. Sun Pharma also saw gains, with its share rising 1.5 per cent to a high of ₹1,888.

Other gainers included Maruti and Power Grid. Conversely, the biggest laggards included Mahindra & Mahindra, InterGlobe Aviation, Trent, Infosys, and Bharti Airtel. Siasat added that SBI Life Insurance Company was also among the major losers.

Muhurat trading is a symbolic, truncated session held on Diwali to mark the beginning of the Hindu calendar year, Samvat 2083. It is considered an auspicious time for investors to make fresh investments for prosperity.
