Sensex and Nifty end lower during Diwali Muhurat trading session
The benchmark Sensex closed 0.04 per cent lower on Sunday, marking only the eighth time in 30 years it ended in the red.
The benchmark Sensex closed 0.04 per cent lower at 80,999.40 during the special Muhurat trading session on Sunday, 8 November, according to reports by Mint and Rediff. The Nifty 50 declined 0.18 per cent to end at 24,986.40. This session marked the beginning of Samvat 2083.
The decline broke an eight-year winning streak for the indices, which had posted gains in every Muhurat session from 2018 through 2025. Over the last 30 years, the Sensex has ended the session in the red only eight times, while it closed higher on the other 22 occasions.
Participation in the session was higher than last year, with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) recording an equity cash market turnover of ₹23,374 crore, compared to ₹19,714 crore in the previous year. The NSE session was inaugurated by its managing director and chief executive Ashish Kumar Chauhan.
Vaibhav Chugh, chief executive of Abakkus Mutual Fund, said the gap between earnings growth and market returns could support a rebound. Kalpen Parekh, managing director and chief executive at DSP Mutual Fund, noted that segments such as cement, power, automobiles, and construction are showing steady growth.
Trader Pallavi Gandhi said she is expecting volatility in the coming months and is adopting a cautious stance towards futures and options trading. Trades placed during the Sunday session will be reflected in investor accounts on Monday, 9 November.
