Sensex and Nifty end lower in Diwali Muhurat trading session

The benchmark indices snapped an eight-year winning streak by closing in the red during the special ceremonial session on Sunday.

The Indian stock market benchmarks ended with small losses during the special 70-minute Muhurat trading session on Diwali, Sunday, 8 November 2026. According to reports from Hindustan Times and Mint, the Sensex fell 28.62 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 80,999.40, while the Nifty 50 dropped 43.95 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 24,986.40.

This close marks the first time in nine years that the benchmark indices have ended the Muhurat trading session in the red, according to Bhaskar English. The session snapped a winning streak for both indices that had continued since 2018. Despite this, Mint noted that the decadal strike rate for both the Sensex and Nifty remains at 80 per cent.

During the session, the Bank Nifty index fell 0.40 per cent. While Nifty Media logged the highest gains with a 1.70 per cent rise, sectors including IT, PSU Bank, Realty, and Oil & Gas traded with losses, Bhaskar English reported.

Among the top gainers were Divi's Lab, Tata Steel, Vedanta Aluminium and Metal, CG Power, Sun Pharma, and Tata Motors PV. Top losers included SBI Life, Tata Capital, IndiGo, DLF, BPCL, and Infosys.

Kamlesh Shroff, National President of the Association of NSE Members of India (ANMI), told ANI that India's macroeconomic fundamentals remain strong, with economic growth of over 7 per cent expected to support equity markets in the new Samvat year.
