CAQM directs Punjab to increase monitoring of farm fires
The Commission for Air Quality Management has instructed seven districts to strengthen enforcement against paddy stubble burning following a rise in incidents.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Sunday directed seven districts in Punjab to improve monitoring and enforcement against paddy stubble burning. According to The Tribune, the order follows a recent increase in farm-fire incidents across the state.
CAQM member secretary Tarun Pithode held a review meeting with officials from Faridkot, Firozpur, Barnala, Bathinda, Patiala, Malerkotla, and Sangrur. The meeting included Deputy Commissioners, District Magistrates, and Senior Superintendents of Police to assess paddy residue management.
Officials were told to increase surveillance, especially during the evening, to monitor stubble burning. The commission also instructed authorities to ensure prompt enforcement when violations are found.
The commission reviewed the use of crop residue management (CRM) machinery and asked district authorities to ensure farmers effectively use balers and other available equipment. It also requested that police personnel be more involved in prevention and enforcement efforts.
The directions aim to address the rise in stubble burning during the post-paddy harvest period. These incidents are a primary concern for managing air pollution in the National Capital Region.
