Delhi-NCR moves to GRAP Stage II as air quality enters very poor category

The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage II restrictions after the capital's air quality index reached 324 on Monday.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region on Monday. According to Outlook, the decision followed Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) entering the 'very poor' category for the first time this season.

The AQI in Delhi rose to 324 at 4 pm on November 2, up from 261 on November 1 and 117 on October 31. The CAQM stated that unfavourable meteorological conditions are likely to keep air quality in the 'very poor' category in the coming days.

Under Stage II, authorities must intensify mechanical road cleaning, water sprinkling, and the use of anti-smog guns. The measures also include stricter inspections of industries, brick kilns, and power plants, alongside increased public transport services such as the Metro and electric buses.

Traffic police will be deployed to reduce congestion, and checks for valid pollution-under-control certificates will be intensified. Hotels and restaurants have been asked to avoid using coal or firewood in tandoors and switch to electricity or gas-based appliances.

The CAQM has urged residents to use public transport, carpool, and avoid burning garbage. Residents can report violations through the 311, Green Delhi, and SAMEER applications.
