Tamil Nadu GST collection raises questions about state economy, says Annamalai
Former BJP leader K. Annamalai stated that the state's recent GST performance indicates concerns regarding fiscal priorities and revenue generation.
Former BJP leader K. Annamalai said on Monday that Tamil Nadu’s GST collection performance over the last six months raises questions about the state economy, fiscal priorities, and the ability of the incumbent TVK government to generate sustainable revenue.
According to The Hindu, Annamalai noted that while GST revenues showed signs of growth in October, the growth remained in single digits.
He said the recovery appears inadequate despite the festive season in Tamil Nadu, extended school holidays, and an increase in tourist inflows and economic activity.
Annamalai stated that the TVK government needs to take measures to augment GST revenues, beginning with monitoring capital expenditure across all departments.
He claimed there is a general feeling that capital expenditure across many state departments has slowed over the past six months, which he said breaks the circular economy created by such expenditure.
