Encroachment under Guwahati flyovers increases city parking problems

Commercial activities and vendors occupying spaces meant for vehicles are adding pressure to the city's congested roads, according to The Assam Tribune.

Spaces beneath flyovers in Guwahati are being occupied by food stalls, paan shops, pushcarts, and various roadside vendors, according to a report by The Assam Tribune on November 2.

These areas, originally intended for motorist parking, are also being used as dumping grounds for waste or for storing construction materials.

Dhanmani Saud, an online platform driver, said he finds it difficult to park his sedan at previously identified spots because temporary shops now occupy them.

Saud alleged that some individuals are collecting rent from vendors to allow them to occupy these public spaces.

A shopkeeper in Silpukhuri, who requested anonymity, denied paying rent but said enforcement officials from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) only clear the area when a senior officer has difficulty parking.

A GMC official stated that the corporation is aware of the issue and is planning permanent vending zones to shift vendors from these locations.

The official added that keeping public areas, including footpaths and spaces under flyovers, clear is a top priority for the GMC.
