Karnataka Police issue safety guidelines for Deepavali firecracker use

Authorities have directed citizens to burst green crackers only between 8 pm and 10 pm to ensure public safety.

The Karnataka Police on Monday issued safety guidelines for the use of firecrackers ahead of Deepavali, directing people to burst them only between 8 pm and 10 pm. According to Moneycontrol, the police stated that fireworks must be burst within this two-hour window and only green crackers should be used, citing Supreme Court directions.

The guidelines prohibit bursting firecrackers in public places and crowded or sensitive locations. These include bus stands, railway stations, hospitals, educational institutions, religious places, petrol pumps, gas stations, old-age homes, and childcare centres. Residents have also been advised to avoid fireworks on main roads or near parked vehicles.

The police cautioned against purchasing firecrackers from unauthorised vendors or online platforms. Consumers should buy from licensed shops and scan the QR code or label on the packaging to ensure products are genuine. If illegal sale or storage is noticed, people should inform the local police or call 112.

Safety instructions include maintaining a safe distance from thatched structures, vehicles, trees, and electrical equipment such as transformers and power lines. Parents and guardians must supervise children while bursting crackers. The advisory also suggests wearing gloves and protective eyewear and avoiding synthetic, nylon, or polyester clothing.

To prevent accidents, the police advised keeping a bucket of water, sand, or fire-extinguishing material nearby. In case of an emergency or accident, people should contact the 112 or 108 helplines. After celebrations, residents are asked to clean their surroundings and dispose of waste safely in designated bins.
