One killed, several injured in gas pipeline blast in Muzaffarpur

An explosion triggered by a damaged piped natural gas pipeline occurred during drain construction work in Bihar on Monday.

A gas pipeline explosion in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Monday killed one person and injured several others, according to reports from The New Indian Express, ANI, and ThePrint.

The incident occurred near Gorbarsahi chowk in the Dumari area during drain construction work being carried out by the Road Construction Department (RCD).

District Magistrate Kumar Gaurav said the explosion happened when a JCB machine used for excavation damaged an underground piped natural gas (PNG) pipeline, which then caught fire and triggered a blast.

The explosion caused significant damage, with reports stating a four-storey building was severely damaged and approximately 50 houses were affected. Windowpanes within a 100-metre radius were shattered, and a JCB machine and an SVU were also damaged.

Sadar police station officer Navlesh Kumar confirmed the death of a motorcyclist and stated that seven people were injured. District Magistrate Kumar Gaurav reported six injuries, noting one person was in critical condition.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kantesh Kumar Mishra said police are coordinating with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Indian Oil experts. A detailed inquiry has been ordered to establish the cause and identify those responsible.
