Two others were hospitalised after attempting to rescue the workers at Hotel Shri Ganga on Saturday night.
Four workers died after being overcome by suspected toxic gases while cleaning a waste chamber at Hotel Shri Ganga on the Ujjain-Dewas road on Saturday night, according to India TV.
The incident occurred around 10.30 pm to 11 pm when the workers entered the chamber to clear waste from the hotel's confectionery and dairy sections.
The deceased have been identified as Kamlesh Tamboli, Nitin, Wahid, and Manoj Meena, a resident of Jhalawar in Rajasthan, Urban Acres reported.
Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said a suspected gas leak may have caused the individuals to collapse. He added that the leak made the floor extremely slippery.
Two people who tried to rescue the workers also fell ill and were hospitalised, but they were later discharged, according to Urban Acres.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief and announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for each of the four families, Urban Acres reported.
Ujjain District Magistrate Roshan Kumar Singh said the administration would investigate whether the workers entered the chamber for cleaning or fell in accidentally. The investigation is ongoing.
