Telangana cybercrime losses fall 20 per cent in first nine months

Reported financial losses dropped to Rs 881.72 crore while funds frozen in fraudulent accounts increased, according to the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau.

Reported financial losses from cybercrime in Telangana fell by 20.2 per cent during the first nine months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to The Pioneer.

Telangana Cyber Security Bureau director Shikha Goel said on Sunday that losses stood at Rs 881.72 crore between January and September, a decrease of Rs 222.70 crore from the Rs 1,104.42 crore recorded a year earlier.

In contrast, the amount placed under lien in accounts belonging to fraudsters grew by 42.2 per cent. This figure rose to Rs 260.30 crore from Rs 183.11 crore in the previous year.

Police stated the increase in frozen funds indicates faster reporting by victims and quicker coordination between investigators and banks. The bureau attributed the trend to ongoing public outreach rather than a single initiative.

The bureau's data shows that 24,886 awareness programmes were conducted up to October, reaching 15,48,905 citizens. In October alone, 4,248 programmes were held involving 2,78,428 participants.

Goel said the bureau will continue to intensify cyber awareness using advanced technology. She advised citizens to report losses immediately via the 1930 helpline or the cybercrime.gov.in portal.
