US clocks fall back one hour as daylight saving time ends

The shift to standard time occurred on Sunday, November 1, while President Donald Trump pushes for permanent daylight saving time.

Most of the US turned its clocks back by one hour at 2 am local time on Sunday, November 1, marking the end of daylight saving time for 2026, according to the Times of India.

The change provides an extra hour of sleep but results in darker evenings. While smartphones update automatically, devices such as ovens, microwaves, and car dashboards require a manual reset.

Hawaii, most of Arizona, and territories including Puerto Rico and Guam did not change their clocks. The Navajo Nation in Arizona switched to match communities in New Mexico and Utah.

President Donald Trump is pushing to make daylight saving time permanent, but the Sunshine Protection Act has stalled in the Senate. Arkansas Republican Tom Cotton leads the opposition to the bill.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supports permanent standard time, stating it aligns better with natural sleep cycles. A Gallup survey found 48 per cent of Americans favour permanent standard time, compared to 24 per cent who want permanent daylight saving time.

The current standard time will remain in place until March 14, 2027, when the country is scheduled to spring forward again.
