IMD predicts warmer and drier November across India

The Indian Meteorological Department expects below-normal rainfall and a weaker Northeast monsoon due to El Niño conditions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) expects most parts of India to experience warmer and drier conditions during November, according to The New Indian Express. The forecast indicates that the Northeast monsoon will likely be weaker, resulting in below-normal rainfall in the Southern Peninsula.

The IMD predicts rainfall for the country will be below 77 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) of 29.7 mm. While most of India may see below-normal rainfall, certain areas in central, northwest, east, and Northeast India are expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall in November 2026.

Daytime temperatures are expected to exceed normal levels in most regions, except for some areas near the foothills of the Himalayas. Nighttime temperatures are also predicted to be warmer across much of the country, though central and eastern India may see normal to below-normal minimum temperatures.

A fresh cyclonic storm is developing over the Bay of Bengal and may be named 'Morasu' if it persists. This storm is expected to affect the Andhra Pradesh coast from November 2 until the early morning of November 3.

The IMD attributes the reduced rainfall to strengthening El Niño conditions in the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, which are expected to continue through November and December 2026. The department also predicts a warmer winter with fewer cold wave days this season.
