New cyclonic storm likely to hit Andhra Pradesh by November 3
The India Meteorological Department expects a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal to intensify into a cyclonic storm.
A new cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coastline in the early hours of November 3, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Saturday that a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying.
The system is predicted to become a cyclonic storm by November 2. If it fully develops, the storm will be named Murasu, a name proposed by India. Mohapatra noted there is a slight possibility it could become a severe cyclonic storm.
The IMD reported that as of 5:30 pm on October 31, the depression was centred over the southeast Bay of Bengal. It was located approximately 980 km southeast of Visakhapatnam and 1,030 km southeast of Machilipatnam.
The storm is expected to bring winds ranging from 80-90 km/hr, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/hr. The IMD forecast isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall for Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 2, with very heavy rainfall expected on November 3.
The IMD also stated that isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Rayalaseema on both November 2 and November 3. Mohapatra added that most parts of the country are likely to see below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures in November.
