Five-layer security proposed for cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan

A senior forest officer said a security plan is being developed following the death of a 19-month-old male cheetah named KNG22.

A five-layer security mechanism is being planned for cheetahs moving through the Cheetah Landscape, which extends from Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan, a senior forest officer said on Sunday.

The Cheetah Landscape covers the Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh to the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan.

The proposal follows the death of KNG22, a 19-month-old male cheetah associated with Kuno National Park, who died from gun wounds in the Pahargarh area of the Morena Territorial Forest Division.

Experts from the Union and Madhya Pradesh governments are working on the security plan for the protection of the animals.

Project Cheetah Director Uttam Kumar Sharma said satellite-collars used for monitoring cannot provide round-the-clock tracking.

Sharma stated that for Kuno cheetahs, a six-hour transmission interval is generally used to balance location information with battery life.
