UP seeks two weeks to respond to Hindon pollution complaints

The Uttar Pradesh government requested more time from the National Green Tribunal to submit an updated affidavit regarding sewage discharge into the Hindon river.

The Uttar Pradesh government has asked the National Green Tribunal for a two-week extension to submit a new affidavit in the Hindon river pollution case. The state's standing counsel informed the tribunal in an adjournment application dated October 31 that information from various departments is still awaited.

The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has recorded 13 complaints against officials regarding the discharge of untreated sewage into the river basin. These complaints involve municipal bodies and civic authorities in Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Shamli, Meerut and Gautam Budh Nagar.

The UPPCB stated it registered these complaints under Section 43 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Named officials include municipal commissioners, executive officers and other senior civic staff.

The board also reported that a joint committee of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and UPPCB inspected 20 sewage treatment plants across the Hindon basin. Eight plants in Saharanpur, Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar were found to be non-compliant with standards set in a 2017 notification.

Samples for the inspection were collected between September 22 and October 13, 2026. The tribunal is examining the discharge of untreated sewage and the performance of sewage treatment infrastructure.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 2, 2026, though the tribunal's acceptance of the adjournment request remains subject to its satisfaction.
