Tamil Nadu implements Rs 10 environmental cess on liquor from November 1
The state-run TASMAC has introduced a new charge on beer, wine, and IMFL purchases at retail outlets.
Consumers in Tamil Nadu must pay an additional Rs 10 for alcoholic beverages starting from Sunday, according to a report by Deccan Herald.
The state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is implementing this new environmental and social welfare cess on all purchases of IMFL, beer, or wine at retail outlets.
A senior TASMAC official said on Saturday that stakeholders, including local suppliers and manufacturers, have been notified to adjust pricing structures to meet the rollout date.
The official stated the move is expected to generate revenue for environmental and social welfare initiatives managed by the state machinery.
To ensure transparency, TASMAC has directed manufacturers and wholesale depots to use proper price labelling with QR codes and has set up designated bank accounts across five regional zones.
Under this mechanism, shoppers can claim the Rs 10 back by returning eligible empty bottles to authorised vendors, the official said.
