Mallikarjun Kharge moves CEC removal motion in mock parliament

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge initiated an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter irregularities.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday moved an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a mock Parliament session in New Delhi, according to The Times of India.

Kharge alleged that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was initiated to remove anti-BJP votes. He further claimed that Gyanesh Kumar is running the Election Commission under the direct instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Congress president stated that the motion aims to safeguard the dignity of a constitutional institution and ensure the Election Commission functions impartially. He said the intention is to keep the common man's trust in the institution intact.

Kharge alleged that since 2014, conspiracies have been hatched to seize and retain power, including the use of electoral bonds, the ED, and the CBI. He claimed there are hundreds of examples of vote theft.

He also criticised the 2023 Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, which was passed after suspending 145 opposition MPs. Kharge said the law grants Election Commissioners a level of protection not afforded to the President or the Chief Justice of India.
