Karnataka Historical Atlas maps state heritage through digital platform
A Kannada-first digital project by Sanchaya connects monuments, manuscripts and dynasties to geography and people.
The Karnataka Historical Atlas, a digital platform developed in Bengaluru, maps the state's history by connecting monuments and manuscripts to districts, dynasties and geography, according to Urban Acres.
Developed by the non-profit initiative Sanchaya, the platform allows users to navigate the past through timelines, maps and curated resources. Categories include district histories, the freedom movement, prominent personalities and dynastic maps.
Sanchaya founder Omshivaprakash HL said the portal provides resources that are citable and can be verified from different sources. The project uses official records and historical publications, such as Epigraphia Indica and volumes of Ithihasa Darsha.
The atlas is designed as a research and learning companion rather than a replacement for textbooks, Omshivaprakash said. It aims to help users understand the relationship between a person, place or event and a specific period.
The platform is primarily in Kannada and includes an English interface. While there have been requests for more languages, the multilingual direction is an ongoing process.
Sanchaya, which was founded in 2010, uses an open-source and open-data model. Students, teachers and the public are invited to contribute to the project, which functions as an ongoing experiment.
