Infant deaths in Attappady highlight health and social crisis
Twelve infants, including ten from tribal communities, have died in Attappady in recent months, according to The Hindu.
Twelve infants have died in Attappady, Kerala, in recent months, with 10 of those deaths occurring in tribal communities, according to The Hindu.
The State government has initiated an expert assessment regarding the deaths. However, tribal organisations claim the crisis is linked to nutrition, maternal health, landlessness, and socio-economic conditions.
Tribal activists cited figures showing that 124 infants have died in the region since 2011. Tribal observers estimate that approximately 10 children have died annually over the years.
Since 2012, Attappady has recorded around 300 abortions, 90 intrauterine deaths, and two dozen stillbirths.
The region previously faced scrutiny in 2013, when 47 tribal infants died.
