Indian Embassy evacuates 19 seafarers stranded in Yemen

The 19 Indian nationals were held in Hodeidah and Sana'a for approximately two weeks before being sent home.

The Indian Embassy in Yemen announced on Sunday that 19 Indian seafarers stranded in the cities of Hodeidah and Sana'a for nearly two weeks have been evacuated. According to The Hindu, the mission stated that all the seafarers are in good health and are currently travelling back to India.

The evacuation follows a previous report regarding 14 Indian nationals on a yacht that encountered an incident near the Yemeni coast. It is not yet known if those 14 individuals are included in the group of 19 recently evacuated.

On October 23, the Indian mission noted that the 14 people on the yacht were safe and that officials were communicating with relevant parties to understand the situation. Yahya Saree, a spokesperson for the Yemen-based Houthi group, had previously claimed that Saudi forces targeted the yacht near Yuqar Island in the Red Sea and that Houthi forces were assisting in the rescue.

The situation occurred during a period of renewed tension between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, involving missile interceptions and airstrikes. This escalation has raised security concerns regarding the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is a major international shipping route.
