Four killed and 88 injured in Egypt train collision

Two trains collided in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province on Sunday, causing several carriages to derail.

At least four people died and 88 others were wounded after two trains collided in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province on Sunday, according to reports by The Hindu, Hindustan Times and the New York Post.

The accident occurred south of Cairo when a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum struck the rear of a service heading from Cairo to Aswan. One of the trains derailed during the collision, which took place approximately 52 kilometres south of the capital.

The Health Ministry stated that the 88 injured passengers were taken to hospitals in the Giza area for medical treatment. While state-owned media had previously reported 120 wounded people, the ministry's count specified 88.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi expressed his concern regarding the accident in a social media post. He has ordered an urgent investigation to ensure that anyone found to be negligent is held responsible.

The Egyptian Railway Authority dispatched emergency teams and cranes to the site to clear the wreckage. Officials are working to restore normal train services as soon as possible.

The collision occurred in an area that has seen previous rail accidents, including a 2002 fire that killed more than 370 people and multiple crashes in 2009.
