Tamil Nadu approves battery energy storage policy to boost green energy
The new framework aims to deploy 2.5 GW of storage capacity to transform the state into a national energy hub.
The Tamil Nadu government has officially approved the Tamil Nadu Battery Energy Storage Systems Policy, 2026, to improve grid stability and clean energy transition, according to the Hindustan Times.
Released on Tuesday, the policy targets the deployment of at least 2.5 GW of storage, which equals a 10 GWh capacity across the state.
The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited will act as the nodal agency for the initiative, which seeks to manage variable renewable energy and reduce power curtailment.
Under the new rules, solar and hybrid energy projects larger than 1 MW commissioned from April 2027 must include battery storage equal to at least 10 per cent of their sanctioned layout, with a four-hour discharge duration.
To support developers, the government is providing a 10-year waiver on transmission and wheeling charges for eligible projects that use the discharged energy within the state.
The framework also mandates compliance with safety, environmental, and cybersecurity protocols, including the use of domestic Energy Management Systems to protect infrastructure.
