Tamil Nadu GST growth slows to 3 per cent in October
Former finance minister Thangam Thennarasu noted that the state's growth trailed neighbouring Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.
Tamil Nadu recorded a 3 per cent GST revenue growth in October, a figure that trailed several neighbouring states, according to figures cited by former finance minister Thangam Thennarasu in a report by Urban Acres.
Thennarasu stated that Kerala recorded 23 per cent growth in October, while Andhra Pradesh saw 24 per cent, Karnataka saw 18 per cent and Telangana saw 14 per cent.
In a post on X, Thennarasu said the gap indicates Tamil Nadu needs an urgent push to strengthen domestic production. He claimed taxes on certain imported goods contributed to the modest revenue increase, while revenue from the state's own production continued to decline.
Former chief minister M K Stalin also criticised the economic performance under the TVK government, alleging that the state's GST growth was below the national average.
Stalin alleged that Rs 1,614 crore in Korean investments intended for Tamil Nadu moved to Andhra Pradesh due to state government negligence. He further claimed that Guidance Tamil Nadu was sidelined by the personal egos of individuals in the current administration.
Stalin also suggested that Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is prioritising campaigning in bypoll constituencies over addressing economic issues. The state government, Guidance Tamil Nadu, and the Korean investors have not responded to these allegations.
