Nikhil Kamath sparks debate on India's tax redistribution system

The Zerodha co-founder compared India's fiscal federalism to China, prompting social media users to challenge his claims.

Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath has triggered a debate on fiscal federalism after comparing India's tax-sharing system with that of China, according to Moneycontrol.

Kamath suggested that unlike in China, Indian states do not retain the revenue they generate. Using Karnataka as an example, he stated that the state's earnings are redistributed to other regions, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

He further argued that Chinese provinces possess more freedom to follow capitalistic economic policies than Indian states. Kamath noted that in China, revenue generated by a state like Karnataka would not be spent in states such as Bihar or Uttar Pradesh.

Social media users have challenged these comparisons, arguing that resource redistribution is a standard feature of fiscal federalism globally. Some users noted that redistribution also occurs within individual states, such as Bengaluru's revenue being shared across Karnataka.

One user highlighted that Maharashtra contributes more than twice the GST revenue of Karnataka, yet faces infrastructure challenges like metro connectivity and highways. Another user questioned the idea of state-exclusive revenue, suggesting that if Bengaluru became a Union Territory, it might still be expected to share revenue with other regions.

The discussion also included claims that China also redistributes resources on a significant scale.
